Water Sports for Kids in Delhi

There are choices of water sports for children, some are for enjoyment and some are for adventure. A simple water sports activity like boating is enjoyed by kids of all age groups. Usually boating and canoeing is very much common among children, teenagers as well as because it gives a sense of pleasure to all of them. Swimming is among the most favorite sports for children, as well as for adults. Although there are about 125 licensed pools in the city, only a few out of them are maintained properly by the civic agencies. If you know how to swim, then you can enjoy in any of the swimming pools in Delhi:

Sailing & Surfing – For adventurous water sports, sailing is the best idea. It is adventurous when the wind is moving fast. Once you have enough practice, you can begin to participate in various sailing competitions held every year. Surfing is also a superb family sport, especially during a sunny day. Defense Services Sailing Clubs, Okhla, New Delhi, is a place where you can go for sailing and surfing.

Boating – Bhalswa Lake – A sports and leisure complex has been built by Delhi Tourism at Bhalswa Lake, it is a rain fed lake located at northeastern edge of Delhi. This offers facilities for boating in pedal boats, kayaks, canoes and speed boats. You can also indulge in fishing. Hovercraft and water scooters have been introduced for the first time in Delhi at this lake. Pedal boating can be available at reasonable rates. Training program in kayaking and canoeing are also organized at this lake and others such lakes in Delhi.

Other Places for baoting

Boating is the best way to beat the scorching summer temperature. Various shapes of boats are available to excite children at the boating spots. The shapes of boats are such as scooter, airplane, crocodile, dinosaur and swan. Besides these paddle boats, motor boats and boats with sheds have also been introduced lately for the convenience of the tourists. The initiative to provide boating facilities in Delhi is taken by Delhi Tourism Corporation. Boating can be done at five different lakes including:

  • Sanjay Lake Boating Point, Mayur Vihar Phase – 2
  • Old Fort
  • Boat club, India Gate
  • Model Town
  • Boat club, Hari Nagar
  • Surajkund is actually a water tank with an artificial lake that provides an excellent boating spot

Timings – Daily between 10 am to 6 pm

Best Time for Water Sports – The best time to enjoy these sports is from the months between November to March, especially in early mornings.

Things to take care before going for any water Sport

For children, water sports are always adventurous and fun filled. While enjoying any sort of water sports, it is mandatory for kids to come in the company of an adult and an attentive lifeguard. Safety has to be given the first priority. There are some compulsory things that need to be taken care of, before getting into any water sport activity. Some precautions for the following activities have been given below:

  • For Boating, Sailing or Surfing

Wear a life jacket while boating. All boats and rafts should also carry extra life jackets, whistle and lifebuoys.

  • For Swimming or Canoeing

Wearing life jackets is a must, even if kids know how to swim. A beginner should stay away from deep waters. Wearing swimming goggles, ear plugs and a swim cap will make you swim conveniently and also avoid having heavy food before or after swimming.

Museums are places of amazement, discovery, education and entertainment for the entire family, and especially for children. Museums are interactive places to learn, which give children a chance to know about the country’s affluent heritage. Some information about the other museums in Delhi, apart from the ones talked about in the previous blog, is mentioned below:

Shankar’s International Dolls Museum

This museum is created by the famous political cartoonist, K Shankar Pillai. The museum houses the largest assortments of costume dolls from all over the world. The museum is situated in the Children’s Book Trust building on Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg. With a separate access, a grand staircase leads up to a hall. The museum is divided into two halves; both the sections have more than 160 glass showcases, mounted on the walls. One part exhibits numerous dolls from Europe, UK, USA, and Australia, etc. The other part includes dolls from Asian countries, the Middle East, Africa and India.

National Science Center

It is a popular science center of National Council of Science Museum showcasing various scientific models, exhibition and artifacts. The concept was designed for the students to build their interest in the field of science. There are numerous galleries in the centre with various themes put on show including the models demonstrated at Human Biology gallery or the Dinosaur’s gallery for animals of Mesozoic era. These are very interesting and fascinate children. Also, other galleries displaying information regarding, India’s contribution to science and mathematics, Nobel Prize winners and other such personalities. National Science Centre also houses a fine library, a souvenir shop for visitors to buy various artifacts.

National Philatelic Museum

The museum has a wide assortment of rare stamps from the period of pre and post independence period. Among its many valuable possessions, the museum is also a house to the first stamp issued in India in the year 1854. The museum gives information on the postal history of India and India’s Philatelic Heritage. Apart from having all the Indian stamps, the museum also has a huge number of foreign stamps. The sales counter outside the museum, sells stamps from all across the globe.

Nehru Planetarium

The Planetarium aims to encourage the concept of space and astronomy among the youth. The Nehru planetarium has an excellent sky theatre with the capacity of seating 270 observers for screening and live shows based on various cosmic subjects including the cosmic movements, stars or the solar system. The planetarium also organizes various astronomy quizzes, workshops, space art contests, telescope making workshops, evening and night sky watch and public lectures. It also features an astronomy magazine ‘Krittika’ to give information on astronomical perceptions. There is also a souvenir shop selling various informative compact CDs.
