Hotels in Delhi are expected to raise room rates by 15-20 % during the Commonwealth Games, which start from October 3, even as hoteliers are yet to see reasonable number of early reservations.

“Demand is expected to pick up closer to the event that is expected to result in many hotels being fully occupied in October,” said  executive director of  Hotels Singhsons, which runs brands like Singhsons Premiere and Hometel besides Carlson brands like Park Inn and Park Plaza.

Hotel Karat87 and Hotel karat87inn vice president-sales and marketing Head said the increase in room rates is expected to be up to 20% more than the current rates.

Several city hotels have already blocked a part of their inventory to be used by delegations and other staff through the organising committee of the Commonwealth Games. Other rooms are expected to be occupied by families and supporters of the athletes besides other individuals associated with the games.

As per HVS India executive director Siddharth Thaker, there are an estimated 15,000 branded rooms of various star categories in the city. “On the ground, even as enquiries are coming in, there are few actual reservations that has happened for the Commonwealth Games so far,” he said.

However, expectation that most hotels will be fully booked during the event could keep out other tourists. Group tours, especially international tourists, are likely to skip Delhi during the first half of October and the likely beneficiaries could be other cities in the north India tourist circuit.

This is worrying top end hotels as only a certain portion of inventory of the luxury hotels will be used to host delegates, said Oberoi Hotels & Resorts president Liam Lambert.

“Ironically, the corporate travellers believe everything is going to be full but we are trying to tell our corporate guests that its business as usual”.

Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque, to the northeast of Minar was built by Qutbu’d-Din Aibak in AD 1198. It is the earliest mosque built by the Delhi Sultans. It consists of a rectangular courtyard enclosed by cloisters, erected with the carved columns and architectural members of 27 Hindu and Jain temples, which were demolished by Qutbu’d-Din Aibak as recorded in his inscription on the main eastern entrance.

Later, a lofty arched screen was erected and the mosque was enlarged, by Shamsu’d- Din IItutmish (AD 1210-35) and Alau’d-Din Khalji. The Iron Pillar in the courtyard bears an inscription in Sanskrit in Brahmi script of 4th century AD, according to which the pillar was set up as a Vishnudhvaja (standard of Lord Vishnu) on the hill known as Vishnupada in memory of a mighty king named Chandra. A deep socket on the top of the ornate capital indicates that probably an image of Garuda was fixed into it.

The Tomb of IItutmish (AD 1211-36) was built in AD 1235. It is a plain square chamber of red sandstone, profusely carved with inscriptions, geometrical and arabesque patterns in Saracenic tradition on the entrances and the whole of interior. Some of the motifs viz., the wheel, tassel, etc., are reminiscent of Hindu designs. Ala ‘i- Darwaza, the southern gateway of the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque was constructed by Alau’d-Din Khalji in AH 710 (AD 1311) as recorded in the inscriptions engraved on it. This is the first building employing Islamic principles of construction and ornamentation.

Alau’d-Din Khalji commenced Ala’i Minar, which stands to the north of Kutub-Minar, with the intention of making it twice the size of earlier Minar. He could complete only the first storey, which now has an extant height of 25 m. The other remains in the Qutab complex comprise Madrasa, graves, tombs, mosque and architectural members.

The balloon pilot can steer the balloon along the licensed path by changing hot and cold air in the balloon as and when required. A single person can take the balloon up to 800 feet, whereas for groups, the height is restricted to 200 feet – 500 feet. A balloon speed entirely depends on the speed of the wind.

• The size of the ballooning basket is small and the walls are low; thus, it is better for a kid to be accompany by an adult

National Science Center

It is a popular science center of National Council of Science Museum showcasing various scientific models, exhibition and artifacts. These are very interesting and fascinate children.
